"On The Corner Of California"

On The Corner Of California

By Chris Brandley

Jamie Lee is a 30 year old aerial photographer who  works with the National Park Service documenting environmental changes due to natural occurrences such as erosion, earthquakes, and forest fires.

The design is meant to showcase different regions of the San Francisco Bay Area, bringing out the character of each zone through color and material.  Sonoma, Marin, Monterey, and San Francisco itself are all condensed into one living space

Marin:  The dining room features furniture made from redwood native to Marin County in northern California.  The organic shapes of the tables contrast with the linear shapes of the chairs, and the whole room is separated by ascending vertical poles of redwood, mimicking the tall trees.

Sonoma:  The kitchen is designed to feel like the interior of a winery in Sonoma County’s Napa valley.  The oak cabinetry represents the oak barrels used to store wine.

Monterey:  While not exactly in the San Francisco Bay Area, the region of Monterey is unique, and I felt it deserved a place in the design.  The bedroom features driftwood accents, and light wood furniture.  The color scheme of the room is meant to mimic the washed out, faded look of an overcast day in Monterey.

Salt Flats:  South of San Francisco is an area used to grow salt in gigantic pools of bacteria-laden water.  At harvest time the water is drained, and a combination of Iodine and salt remains in very organic patterns.  The floor of the bathroom is meant to portray these patterns.  The bathroom fixtures all show flat, horizontal planes of water to re-create the full pools of salt water.

San Francisco:  The living room acts as the center of the design, much as San Francisco is the center of the Bay Area.  A pressed concrete floor and sleek-shaped furniture bring out the modern, trendy character of San Francisco.  The deep blue wall acts as a contrast to the beautiful sunsets seen over the Golden Gate Bridge.
